First I want to welcome all new members to our forums. I hope that in time we will grow to include a large gathering of students of Stoa as well as other philosophies. After all, we cannot grow in a vacuum. Having others look critically at our ideas and ideals and challenge them is an important factor for any living philosophical movement.
My name is Joe. I'm one of the admin and the founder of this forum. I'm a registered member of New Stoa as well as a member of the New Stoa Facebook group and various other Facebook groups on Stoicism.
Stoicism has interested me since I was in High School. However, I would consider 2003 to be the year that I became a true student of Stoa. That was the year that I first read the Enchiridion and quite a of Seneca's letters and made the decision to actively attempt to change my life to better reflect Stoic ideals.
My decision in starting this forum came simply because I was unable to find another outlet like this. For me, writing is the key to understanding and a forum where others are able to comment, critique and debate those thoughts gives everyone involved more exposure to a variety of ideas.
Ideally I would like to contribute at least one new topic for discussion per day and I hope that others will contribute their own topics as well so we can get some lively discussion going.

Hello, my name is Zach. I forgot how I happened upon Stoicism but it's recently become a casual interest of mine. In other words, I read Meditations and that's about it. I find some of the mentioned principles helpful, though honestly, I tend to cherry pick whatever makes me feel better. At the moment the subject is more of a fascination to me rather than something to actually follow. I hope to learn more about it as a member here.

Howdy - - I'm Mark.
I've considered myself a Stoic for about 4 years -- introduced to it by Wm. Irvine's book. I think of myself as a religious humanist, an atheist and a Stoic, but not necessarily in that order. I tell people that I am a secular humanist and an unbeliever so that they will make the correct assumptions about me. I do not hide my Stoicism, but I don't talk about it much -- all of my atheist friends get squirmy when I bring it up.
It would be nice if we had a different word for Stoics but I cannot think of any candidates. I tend to think of modern Stoicism as more of a religion than a philosophy -- I realize that I am in a very, very tiny minority in that regard. Obviously, I have a loosey-goosey definition of religion.

Hi I'm alethic.
I stumbled onto Stoicism a few days ago and am search for a use as I see it from the point of view of one who naturally came about as a Stoic. I.e., I reasoned out something ridiculously close to stoicism 21 years ago when I dedicated myself to the pursuit of mental mastery for the reward of a mastered life. Like Mark, many believe perfection (Sage-hood as it were) is impossible, where I have found that is not the case. Nature is only as perfect as it is just as we are, perfecting our understanding of that -perfect that we are of nature- is the pursuit of the Sage. Thus, mastery of the pursuit is the path to Sage-hood. What is Truth?
This is where I have a problem with modern appearances of Stoicism. It is seems to be purely applied as a patch for non-mastery of the pursuit. As if it is meant to keep sheep.. sheep or psychologists... rich. Not that it is the direct intent of those involved but it does imply that the basis of Stoicism is neglected.. albeit missing, corrupt or ignored. What it breaks down to is what is the source of pure reason as dna so to speak? The dictator of Nature as causal of sentience. The source for which all Stoic logic espouses from. The basis from which Self control is goodly seen as inherent of a proper math of Truth.
That's me in a nutshell or nutjobshell. If I post, you should now have an idea of what origin you are up against. I tend to hold dialectics as a sandbox for Q Methodologies and a source for smiles so please humor if you can.

Hiya,
My first introduction to Stoicism was the School of Life video about it on YouTube. I was instantly sold on it. I read The Enchiridion and now I'm reading The Meditations. I watch videos daily, journal, and do the negative visualization. It helps me with worry, frugal living, anguish/anger, difficult people, and temperance, among other things.
Thanks for this forum!

Hello, Thank you for adding me to the group. I had a somewhat traumatic experience on how I stumbled upon Stoicism . In 2009I found myself without work and the days turned into months then the months turned into years 2 years to be exact. In 2010 I was seriously thinking of ending what nature had created . My wife was the only one working and I had fallen into this black hole of depression and worthlessness .I figured at that time it was hopeless and everyone would just be better off without me . Drinking heavily and increased my tobacco habit . I remembered while scrolling through Facebook that my cousin now at the University of Ohio, had gone to Greece 🇬🇷 while in college . We talked about it and he mentioned the stoics . Never thought much of it til that moment . I read about them and I will never forget “ if it is not in your control you must say to yourself it is nothing to you”. I don’t know why but I just lost it! It brought such a peaceful feeling over me and I began to keep telling myself that . I found a tincture to my pain. Since that moment I have grown in strength and maturity . Sorry for the long story but it’s mine. I hope Stoicism brings peace to you as it did for me.
